Traditionally, in the next Distro release: The Ubuntu 21.04 \u2014 \u201cHirsute Hippo\u201d version.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But this is not going to happen this time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You must be wondering\u2026 \u201cYeah, but why?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And today&#8217;s post will answer you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Sebastien Bacher&#8217;s post makes all sense<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In a recent <a href=\"https:\/\/discourse.ubuntu.com\/t\/staying-on-gtk3-and-gnome-3-38-this-cycle\/20466\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">post on Ubuntu&#8217;s Discourse<\/a>, developer Sebastien Bacher wrote:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group\"><div class=\"wp-block-group__inner-container is-layout-flow wp-block-group-is-layout-flow\">\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>&#8220;The topic of what to do about the new GNOME started being discussed and after some consideration, we decided to stick to GTK3 and GNOME 3.38 this cycle.<\/p><p>There are quite some moving parts in GNOME 40<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>The new shell design, is it going to be fully ready in one cycle? what\u2019s the impact on our desktop and extensions? we will likely have design questions to resolve and non-trivial code changes<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>GTK4 is out, Debian is packaging it (currently waiting on NEW review) so that part shouldn\u2019t create extra work for us but then what\u2019s the impact? is the new version stable enough? GNOME isn\u2019t likely to transition fully over a cycle, does it bring risks? Yaru and the new GTK, how ready is it?<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>Those are topics we are going to spend resources on and ideally we would be helping to move things forward, but it\u2019s already mid-cycle, we didn\u2019t account for any of those and the team is already overworked.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>So, according to Sebastien Bacher, the reason behind this is the stability of a new GTK4 toolkit, a major shell design overhaul in GNOME 40.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Due to the new GNOME shell design, Ubuntu&#8217;s developers are avoiding upgrading desktop packages to GNOME 40 because it can have a big impact on the Ubuntu desktop and extensions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The same goes for the recently released GTK 4 toolkit, which will not be available in the next release of Ubuntu 21.04 due to thematic issues, as Canonical develops its desktop theme for <a href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/ubuntu\/yaru\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Ubuntu called Yaru.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image is-style-default\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"537\" src=\"http:\/\/45.42.162.214\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/ubuntu_yaru-1024x537.png\" alt=\"Ubuntu 21.04 Yaru Theme\" class=\"wp-image-1312\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.letscloud.io\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/ubuntu_yaru-1024x537.png 1024w, https:\/\/www.letscloud.io\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/ubuntu_yaru-300x157.png 300w, https:\/\/www.letscloud.io\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/ubuntu_yaru-768x402.png 768w, https:\/\/www.letscloud.io\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/ubuntu_yaru-1536x805.png 1536w, https:\/\/www.letscloud.io\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/ubuntu_yaru-1568x822.png 1568w, https:\/\/www.letscloud.io\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/ubuntu_yaru.png 1920w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption>Yaru Theme<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>So this decision, albeit a disappointing one, makes perfect sense. Even though 21.04 is a short-term support release, Canonical doesn&#8217;t want to unleash a version of Ubuntu that is not polished.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What to expect in Ubuntu 21.04 (Hirsute Hippo)<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>With Ubuntu 21.04, user&#8217;s home directories will finally be private, safe, and secure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Home folder is no longer \u2018world-readable\u2019 by default. Or to be explicitly technical, the directory permissions have changed from 755 to 750.
